Self Acupressure and Yoga
The series of instructional videos for Phase 1 teaches you two powerful protocols for menstruation. Phase 1 is called the blood phase, which begins with the onset of your period. The goal of this phase is to properly shed the uterine lining, by focusing on moving blood and vital energy. Blood and energy must be flowing in the right direction, which is down and out of your body with a healthy flow. The Phase 1 menses protocol clears the uterus of old blood and tissue. This sets the stage for a fresh, healthy lining to support implantation and pregnancy. The series of instructional videos for Phase 2 is based on a research-proven acupuncture protocol to increase the uterine lining. Phase 2 begins about a week after you start your period and lasts until ovulation. The goal of this phase is to build blood and energy. This highly effective point protocol and yoga series thickens the uterine lining and helps healthy eggs to develop and mature for ovulation.
These recipes minimize carbohydrates as you have lots of energy right now and have lots of estrogen floating around your body. Toward the end of this phase you experience a sharp rise in lutenizing hormone which stimulates one follicle to swell and burst, releasing an egg into one of your fallopian tubes.
In this series of meditations we continue to bring the resource of peaceful awareness to our emotional conflicts. We bring mindfulness to how we project our feelings, to what is unacknowledged within us and within our relationships and again to our fear. We do this as we bring peaceful awareness to ovulation, the sperm combining with egg, the growth and tiny movement of the fertilized egg, the balanced hormones, particularly progesterone, helping the uterus prepare for implantation and the continued growth of the fertilized egg through the fallopian tubes. Finally we bring awareness to the healthy development of the uterine lining.

This series of instructional videos for Phase 3 teaches you ovulation protocol. Phase 3 begins with ovulation and lasts for a week following ovulation. Blood and feminine energy have built to a maximum level and now the body is ready for ovulation. The goal of this phase is warmth and movement to support proper release and unobstructed travel of the egg down the fallopian tube. This ovulation protocol uses points and poses that warm the body, increases blood flow and reduces uterine and fallopian tube contraction. It also supports the hormones needed for ovulation.
These recipes focus on foods that both support ovulation and also help you stay balanced and free from sugar and carb cravings. You have rising progesterone in your body now, which keeps the uterine lining in tact. Your estrogen is rising and testosterone rises towards the end of this cycle.
In Phase 4 of the Mindful Fertility Meditations we begin to embody courage. In this work courage doesn’t mean fearlessness. You don’t need courage when there is no fear. You need courage as you wait for the results of your cycle, when there is fear. Courage comes from peaceful awareness, which we start to deepen into wisdom and love this week. We begin to bring courage and peaceful awareness to the fertilized egg traveling through the fallopian tube toward the uterus, to the implantation of the egg into the uterus, to the growth of the implanted egg and to the beginnings of the placenta and the development of the embryo.

This series of instructional videos for Phase 4 teaches you implantation protocol. The goal of this phase continues to be about warmth, movement, and now building energy. Blood flow will continue to be the main priority in order to create the best environment for the embryo to develop. I want to share Vanessa’s Story with you…

and by August 2016 she was 16 weeks pregnant.

When Vanessa began the Mindful Fertility Journal she was three months away from her third FET transfer.
The most challenging part of her failed attempts, she said, was that the embryos were “normal” and no one knew why the cycles did not work. Vanessa (40 years old) was diagnosed with unexplained infertility and was terrified that her fear was causing the failed cycle attempts.
“The hardest part right now is to not think I did something wrong since the embryos had been screened and were healthy. I know in my head that is not the case, but I can’t stop blaming myself.”
As she began the Mindful Fertility program she had a series of revelations:
“Your program has brought up two things for me:
1) I realize that I have been so focused on becoming a mother that I’ve lost myself. And so I have decided to take 5 months off before my next FET to detox from hormones and get back to me.
2) I am beginning to notice just how much fertile energy I am using up trying to bury “negative” emotions (in quotes because I have decided not to think of them as negative anymore) like self-blame, sadness, anger, fear and guilt. I am using the meditations and journaling to express those emotions now. And I feel so much better!”
After five months of using the Mindful Fertility Journal to prepare for her next FET cycle, she wrote me this:
“I had my transfer yesterday, so am in the middle of my two week wait. I am living and breathing the MFJ meditations to try to maintain my functioning at the moment (I keep listening to Day 20 since fear of miscarriage is big). I half expect/fear my period to start any moment since it has every other time, but I keep reminding myself that I cannot focus on past stories for my truth now. It is my conditioned response to analyze every physical sensation, so being only aware and autonomous is a learning process. My husband says he thinks so too (this is mainly due to the fact that I have not had a meltdown yet and normally do by 5 days after transfer). I am trying not to give in to the urge to prepare myself one way or the other for the test results (next Monday), and instead focus on the here and now–not an easy task.”
I’ll never forget the day I got this email:
“My test results were positive today! I am pregnant (I was starting to wonder if I would ever be able to say that). It has not totally sunk in yet, but I am very excited. I was meditating outside today while I waited for lab results, and was aware of how grateful I am to have found the MFP and your support. It has been a long road, but I am also aware of how this moment is a beginning too. Thanks.”
Then I got this email:
“Well, it looks like my pregnancy has miscarried. The doctor doesn’t know why. It is disappointing on many levels. I am taking care of myself these next few days.”
I encouraged Vanessa to continue with the Mindful Fertility Journal practices during this crucial time for the mind-body.
A month later I got this email:
“My doctor is not sure how (there is a lot the world of science does not understand), but I am still pregnant!!! At my last ultrasound, it showed a healthy baby moving around with a good heartbeat. Today I am at week 9. After I thought I had miscarried, I did not feel like it was time to jump to the next step, so I spent a week just being in the moment, not knowing, just being. It was healing and I was ready to let go of this pregnancy if that was was was meant to happen. However, I am thrilled that it went the other direction.”
You could argue that Vanessa’s pregnancy is a total fluke.

In 2006, Dr. Colin Smikle, reproductive endocrinologist and Medical Director at Laurel Fertility Care asked me to develop a mind-body program for fertility at his San Francisco fertility practice.
